History of Operation Bed Spread
Operation Bed Spread was created in November 2012 by a men’s Bible study group at Saint Simons United Methodist Church. Operation Bed Spread (O.B.S.) works to improve the lives of children and their families by providing mattresses, box springs, frames, sheets, and pillows to people who have no bed in which to sleep. The idea for O.B.S. originated when one of the members of the men’s Bible study, Rees Carroll, was mentoring a third grader at Saint Simons Elementary School, who was being bussed over from Brunswick. The child’s teacher brought to the member’s attention that the student was behind in his studies due to the fact that the child was falling asleep in class. Later, the teacher brought to the mentor’s attention that the child did not have a bed. He was sleeping on the floor with his older sister, who kicked him at night. The Bible study group was informed and took action! Beds were provided to the child and his older sister. From that story, Operation Bed Spread was born. To date, Operation Bed Spread has delivered over 2050 beds to children and families in the community. The O.B.S. warehouse is currently located on Saint Simons at Brumbach Development and Real Estate where rent isn’t required.
About Operation Bed Spread
The members of O.B.S. believe that, in the USA, education is the great equalizer. Education allows people to improve themselves and their communities. Any funds given to O.B.S. are used for the purchase of gas, mattresses, sheets, and other costs involved with daily operation of our organization. Early in 2018, money was donated to O.B.S. for the purchase of a much-needed box truck. Funds will also be used to pay the monthly insurance on the truck. With the addition of the box truck, O.B.S. has begun helping nearby communities. To date, beds have been delivered to Glynn, Ware, Appling, Wayne, Liberty, Camden, Brantley, and McIntosh counties. Operation Bed Spread plans to expand further into Georgia and into Florida.
O.B.S. is a 501(c)(3) tax exempt organization.
